Jamtse is Tibetan word which means “loving-kindness”. Jamtse in Action seeks to bridge the ever widening gap with our elder generation. By involving youth, Jamtse hopes to inspire younger generations to take an interest in the elders of the community, and take responsibility for those who are less fortunate. For our society, Jamtse aims to serve as a platform to express their care and love for the elders.

Why is there a need for Jamtse?

The residents of the Elders Home in Dharamsala don’t have the opportunity to travel beyond their immediate neighborhood. Many of the retired individuals have never had the chance to see or experience some of the major local attractions. They don’t have the human resources, financial resources or means to travel outside of their neighborhood. Jamtse meets the needs of the retirees by providing transportation, food, and arranging field trips to several popular holy and tourist destinations in Dharamsala. Jamtse also engages them in various activities at the Elders home, the main focus of all this is to bring in more interaction amongst the residents and with the youngsters. We also provide them with small basic needs that they cannot afford on their own like shoes, socks, caps, clothes etc.

Who are the residents?

Most of the residents at the Elders home came to India after Chinese invasion into Tibet in 1959. They spent most of their youthful time in building the Exile Tibetan Community and in the process faced lots of hardship. Many of them left their family back in Tibet and since then never got a chance to get in touch with them. All of them are now above sixty with no family members to support them at this critical age. This is where Jamtse comes in to bring some ray of joy in their life.
